You know, slipware has been used to commemorate and celebrate events for a long long time. The techniques, both the sgraffito and the slip trailing don't just lend themselves to it, they positively throw themselves at it. I had been shying away from doing something commemorative for this Diamond Jubilee year but after much persuasion I did.
I slipped this charger at the beginning of April so it is drying out
slowly. Fingers crossed it'll make it through the kiln in one piece. It's about 20" diameter, well at least it was when I made it, a good bit smaller with the shrinkage by now though.
The tree is a Golden Ash, apparently there is a particularly fine one in the gardens at Buckingham Palace and where would the Queen be without her faithful corgis?
Hope you like it, it took me a little while to decorate it.

ReplyDeleteSuch a fine piece but laughing at itself in such a Shakesperean artisan way. The Corgis are great and the casually hung crown. My absolute favourite part are the dates with the double crown that simply couldn't be bettered. Its terrible to think its future is in the hands of the kiln Gods.

GZ, yes the biggest my electric kiln will take, next step raw glaze and wood fire......
Glad you like it Dixie, the kiln bit is a scary bit, especially considaring the number of these large chargers that I have lost in firings but it's the bit that makes it too, fingers crossed.
Hopefully if it comes through in one piece it'll be for sale, maybe at Spring Fling or at Hatfield, we'll see.
